William Shakespeare was an English actor, poet and playwright, born in 1564. His plays were written and first performed during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and her successor, James I.
Shakespeare wrote tragedies, Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet, and also comedies, like The Tempest and Twelfth Night.
During Shakespeare’s lifetime his plays were performed in theatres and became very popular. Women were not allowed to act in the theatre, so the female roles in Shakespeare’s plays were performed by men.
